What should I do if my cactus is turning brown?
Desert cacti prefer dryness between watering and if you don’t allow this break, you run the risk of root rot, which results in a brownish discoloration at the base of the stem. To avoid this problem for indoor cacti, let the soil dry at least between 4 to 5 cm before watering again.
Will a brown cactus turn green again?
If this is the case, simply provide some partial shade during the hottest days of the year and the plant should recover. It would also help to learn about the cactus’ lighting requirements. Some take to full sun really well while other plants do better in light shade.
How do you keep cactus from rotting on top?
When rot occurs aboveground, near the tip or in the middle of the stem, simply cut off and toss the top part using a sharp knife or pruning shears. Study the wound on the lower part of the stem to be sure there is no sign of rot (dark, spreading tissue or even just an orange discoloration).
